Helping 1 child( World Vision)

Came across this brochure of the organization called World Vision. It is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.Organization was started by an American Bob Pierce in 1953 in Korea to help out children orphaned in Korean War.
Children always delight me and when I have an opportunity to help out one such needy kid, then why not :). Also gives me more satisfaction when I can see where and on what the money is being spent. I decided to sponsor a girl named SAPNA(in Hindi meaning a dream ). I received this picture stand with details of SAPNA. I came to know through same where SAPNA is living in India, which class she is studying in, what her parents do, what's her favorite subject.

Closure of Chennai Chapter.....

Finally the Chennai chapter came to a closure ...with new opportunity to work for an Israeli client COMVERSE engagement in Noida starting 18th December. It had been a memorable journey of 6 months with company of very good roomies( Kaushik, Aditya and Srivatsav aka Chiru) as well as MBA colleagues Sachin and Meena. I still recall Sachin laughing at me the day I told him I am posted in chennai and 2 months later he landed up being at same place with a job in Cognizant. Happened to get to know Aditya's girlfriend Shweta as well as Chiru's girlfriend Priya also. Both excellent cooks. Description of all people mentioned above I will leave for some later time. To my surprise just a week before leaving got this parting gift from Shweta. In spite of asking many times she didnt disclose where she got it from . Anyways liked it very much...though had to search on google/wikipedia for what it is actually called.

Amazon's Kindle

New gadget for book lovers. Biggest advantage is the light weight compared to carrying 4-5 books around. I dont know how far book lovers would be receptive to this method of reading. Looks to be promising though as per the promotional speeches. It took 3 years for Amazon to develop the same. Currently it is only available in USA.

Racing Indian Mobile Market

While reading an article on Economist online came across this figure. India is the worlds fastest growing mobile market. Looking back just around 7 years back the % increase in mobile connectivity is staggeringly high. Thanks to lowering of the regulations by the government and entry of many players into the market. When Reliance Communications created a world record by selling 1 million mobile phones within a week sometime back, it shook all other players in the market. Mobile connectivity has helped all and players like Reliance have helped it reach to a mass level by bringing the rates down to as low as Rs 700 (US $18). I got my first one Nokia 2100 for about Rs6500 (US $167) back in 2003. Another interesting comparison to see is the growth of wireless versus landline connections which have been there for decades.

A flight of the Pigeons

This book is from a well known Indian author Ruskin Bond. The book narrates a story of an English family trapped in the city of Sikandapur during the first revolt of 1857 to liberate India from British rule. Published in 1975 the story is about an obsession of a man(Javed) to marry one of the British woman, who he planned to kill during the revolt and instead falls passionately in love with one of the woman. Story also portrays the strength and courage of the girl's mother to keep her out of reach of Javed.Good read .A Movie based on the same story was released in 1978 in India and won many awards.

The Little Prince

Excellent read :). The book is one of the most famous in the world. It was written by a french aviator pilot (Antoine de Saint-Exupery) during World War II in his exile period in USA. I would recommend all to read it irrespective of the age.
Oh ya , word of caution, there is an introduction paragraph about the authors history, I dozed off 2-3 times while reading. Tends to be too detailed and does not hold interest. You should not form an impression that the story would be the same. I would recommend directly start from the story. Much better!

India @20 cm/year

Ann sent link of an interesting article on mail . It explains the reason of India's landmass speration from a land named Gondwanaland which existed in South Pole region some 130 million years back.
The story of India’s high-speed journey began more than 100 million years ago on another continent, called Gondwanaland. This continent, which lay near the present-day South Pole, was a large landmass composed of what are now Africa, Australia, Antarctica and India. But around 130 million years ago, Gondwanaland began to drift apart. That may have been because it was being heated from below by a giant volcanic plume, says Rainer Kind, a geologist at the Free University in Berlin. Whatever the cause, it sent different parts travelling off at different speeds in different directions, he says.

Antarctica remained more or less stationary, while Australia and Africa drifted slightly farther afield. But India took off for the north at an incredible speed of 20 centimetres a year, Kind says. That might seem relatively slow, but for a landmass it’s an impressive clip. In fact, Kind says, "this is the fastest speed of a continent ever detected".

The results help settle a debate about how lithospheric thickness influences a continent’s motion.

The Fifth Mountain

7th read of Paulo Coelho. Hard to grasp at first. Tough to read with lot of religious context involved. Since I am not well versed with Bible it was difficult to grasp some portions of the novel . Story begins in not to usual way where 2 men are talking to each other in a hideout waiting for the death which they are quite sure they would receive. The reason being they are in a land called Israel whose king has ordered execution of all prophets in the region. One man succumbs to death while other (Elijah) survives. This man is a carpenter turned escapee as he told the king what he heard from the angels. This man hear from angels which show him what he should do next. Whenever he is on the verge of losing hope because of despair , the angel come to rescue and show him the path. The Queen is shown to be the culprit with her beauty seducing the King and making him convert the city to follow her God. The story is about this survivor, how he goes to other place Akbar, find refuge but only to be traded for money in future...the people of the place worship Gods which live on the 5th mountain( the name derived so as not to make angry any gods and 5th mountain in series visible from the city area) . To many versus with angels are somehow not interest binding. The man takes shelter in a woman place , but tragedy struck and widow's only son becomes ill and dies....the resident put blame on Elijah, who is suppose to be executed. He has to travel to God place where lightening from heaven will struck and take his life. That doesn't happen and he comes back from mountain unscathed and brings back life into the dead boy. All in village are in great praise for him. He slowly gains confidence of governor....but not with commander and very influential high priest. Elijah has considerable power but uses his power to solve disputes in front of common gathering of people . The governor is in high praise for him. Then war breaks out and Elijah loses widow whom he has fallen in love and is curses himself ...He also has a obligation he feels that God has chosen him for bringing back his Lord in his land called Israel. The man rebuilds the destroyed refuge city named Akbar from ruins by installing confidence in all those who have been left behind because they cant go to other place after destruction. The story brings point that sometimes one has to be in fighting stance with the almighty.Quite a heavy read.
Quote from book:

1.To be happy for no reason
2.To always be busy with something
3.To know how to demand with all his might that which he desires

Customer Service

On my way back from trip back home, I had booked a ticket with Kingfisher airlines. As soon as I arrived at the airport , a person nicely dressed in red shirt and black pants came up greeted first and asked if I was flying by Kingfisher airlines. Amazed, as I have never seen such instance happening to me , I said yes. He asked me to wait till he gets a trolley to carry my luggage, for a moment I thought he might have mistaken me for someone else :p. We then went in to the check in counter , where there were about 5-6 people in queue. On observing this , the guy asked me to wait and carried my email print out of ticket to a lady, first I thought is this some kind of token system but later realized that it was electronic ticketing system , the lady was carrying one electronic gadgets and issuing tickets apart from regular counters. Two experiences side by side. Really created a "Wow" effect . Now thats called customer service. Though the flight got delayed by 50minutes and food was ok type....still the initial contact left the wow effect of flying with this airlines. Was wondering later if the same thing is repeated by all competitors then it would become a necessity and would no longer have a wow factor. The flight had individual TV panels for all , also there was some information with respect to height(went till 11000 m), speed(max 847 Km/hr) , temperature( went upto -46 degree celcius) and travel time(started from 2.15 hrs) remaining for destination, map in the default channel. Good experience flying with this airlines .

The Devil and Miss Pyrm

The Sixth book. Third in the series of the trilogy “the seventh day”. This one is about the question of whether the human being is good or evil? The story to portray this is about a stranger who comes to a small village, where everyone knows each other and any activities doesn’t take long to spread around. There is a young woman who is having lot of dreams about moving out of the village like others of her age. The stranger puts up a game play in which all in the village are involved of choosing to make a sacrifice in order to attain some wealth which the stranger has got. His intention of playing the game is to seek and answer he is looking for “Is human being good or evil?” Extended debates on good and evil, many short stories related to the village and otherwise, some legends which people believe in.

Some quotes:
- There are 2 kinds of idiots – those who don’t take action because they have received a threat and those who think they are taking action because they have issued a threat.

- Japanese martial arts teaching- The best way to weaken one’s enemy was to get him to believe that you were on his side.

- Good and Evil struggle in all people on earth. It was all a matter of control. And choice.

Veronica Decides To Die

The fifth one from same author and second in the trilogy of “On the seventh day”. Most of the part one would feel quite sad, especially the initial one as all talk is negative. But in spite of that it still manages to catch hold of reader’s attention. That is one common thing across all the authors book I have read so far (at least for me). The story is about young woman named Veronica who decides to take on her own life as she doesn’t see any good reason to live longer due to the same routine path every day. She has become bored with her current life. She swallows some dozen sleeping pills but the death doesn’t come that easy. She finds herself landed up in a hospital, not usual but mental. The reason I guess one would figure out. To her surprise she doesn’t seem to believe first but then as soon as she gains consciousness she again start thinking of ways to eliminate herself. The doctor says she has just a week to live as the swallowing pills have done a severe damage to her body. The book explains in details about the people she meets, their lives, about madness in those 7 days and how it changes the way she thinks of life and its meaning. The book finishes off at a happy ending which doesn’t look to be till the very last part. Plenty to think and ponder on from this read as well. I also feel all of us are crazy/ mad in some way or other. A person too occupied by something is generally considered crazy or asking questions which others generally consider as too stupid but for which others also don’t have an explanation. It’s the way it is, no questioning about the common rules which have been defined by don’t know who.

Quotes/Facts:
-Madness is the inability to communicate your ideas. Its as if you were in a foreign country, able to see and understand everything that’s going on around you, but incapable of explaining what you need to know or of being helped, because you don’t understand the language they speak there.
- Laws had not been created to resolve problem, but in order to prolong quarrels indefinitely
-Some things are governed by common sense, other things however become fixed because more and more people believe that the way they should be.
- Why the arrangement of the keys on typewriter the way it is?
The first such machine was invented by Christopher Scholes, in 1873, to improve calligraphy , but there was a problem: if a person typed very fast the keys got stuck together and stopped the machine working. Then Scholes designed the QWERTY keyboard, a keyboard that would oblige typists to type more slowly. It so happened that Remington- who were sewing machine manufacturers at the time-used the QWERTY keyboard for their first typewriters. That meant that more people were forced to learn that particular system, and more companies started to make those keyboards, until it became the only available model. (…. I also thought about same but then assumed its because this way one could type fastest, some research done and people would have arrived at this combination being the fastest…..till I read in the book)
- An awareness of death encourages us to live more intensely. This reminds me of the movie
Griffin and Phoenix. This is exactly what the 2 people do (suffering from cancer and knowing they would die soon ),living and doing what they always intended to do but resisted. They were living out their dreams :).

By The River Piedra......

The 4th read, was quicker than I expected. As with the others once I started didn’t felt like leaving it in the middle. This one talks about story of love again, starts with a flashback (past) and ends in the present. This one is the first of the novels of the trilogy "On the seventh day". A woman from a small town who is in touch with his childhood friend meets him again on his request after 12 years. They both have stayed in touch with each other through mails all these years. She has stayed back at the same place where as the man has traveled around the world. The ‘Other’ in the woman is quite dominant in the beginning , she questions every move, though she thinks love is not possible as they had been living too far and for love closeness is a must. But to her surprise the man is in love with her and tells her. She first rejects it but as she spends along more time with the man over a week long trip, by the end of it she is deeply in love with him. The man is headed for a spiritual life, has got healing powers which makes him quite popular among the local population living there. They refer to him as the one who perform “Miracles”. The book also talks of the feminine side of the God in form of Virgin Mary (the mother of Jesus). The man has a big belief in the Goddess and attributes the reason for his special skills to be the mother goddess. He takes the woman to places and performs rituals as per those related to the Goddess. The woman has lost faith in the existence of god as she has suffered some setbacks over these years. But by the end of it she has regained her Faith, and in faith is the God. The end is quite interesting when one as a reader the story is poised towards a sad ending with lovers departing…the story takes a twist and the flashback is now complete and present starts…and the two childhood friends reunite.
The title comes from the woman sitting by the side of river Piedra , weeping and writing the story, detailing all what has passed by in one week she was with her childhood friend and who she loves dearly now.

Some quotes:

* Spiritual life is essential to love. One doesn’t love in order to do well or to help or to protect someone. If we act that way, we are perceiving the other as a simple object, and we are seeing ourselves as wise and generous persons. This has nothing to do with love. To love is to be in communion with the other and to discover in that other the spark of God.

The Zahir

The third in the series by the same author as the last 2 books I read. Much more sophisticated and complex to understand but still holds on ones interest like the other two. Its about an author in search of his missing wife learning through the times what Love is all about before he finds her again. Though I read a lot more interesting things to write about but cant recollect. The lesson this book tries to convey in my view is to define the true essence of love which I guess many lack to understand. The word forming the title of the book means obsession which is what the main character in the story suffered from in the beginning. Also there is an interesting insight on why rail tracks are always about 143.5 cm apart. The book surely made me think again, trying to reevaluate some of the fundamentals which were so imbibed without ever realizing the same. The author does a beautiful job trying to say things generally marked taboo quite openly in the book, i guess one of the reasons of success for his books is he speak about things through the characters of his stories which people could relate to being in some bits their own and then trying to find and answer of how to deal with it in a correct way. As with the earlier book lot of things to ponder upon when one reads through the book, and definitely more readings required to understand completely. There are some sudden shifts in the plots so one gets confused sometimes as one has just been in same frame of reference as last read paragraph and suddenly some other scene is built up and it starts right away without any introductory paragraph in beginning....makes one feel lost out sometimes but that's a style of writing i guess :). Some interesting insights on some practices in Kazakhstan and France. Oh remembered, the book was banned in Iran, that drove further interest in me as to find the reason for the same ...which is guess happens to be some sharp comment marked against mohammed preachings.

Some quotes which I could mark down while reading:
- Freedom is not the absence of commitments, but the ability to choose- and commit myself to-what is best for me.
- People always believe what they want to believe
-Love is an untamed force. When we try to control it , it destroys us. When we try to imprison it, it enslaves us.When we try to understand it, it leaves us feeling lost and confused.
-Epilepsy is an excess of electrical impulses in one specific area of the brain, which provoke convulsions of greater or lesser severity.
-acomodador: there is always an event in our lives that is responsible for us failing to progress
-Suffering occurs when we want other people to love us in the way we imagine we want to be loved, and not in the way the love should manifest itself- free and untrammelled, guiding us with its force and driving us on.

Pulicat Lake!

Went to Pulicat lake with Kaushik and Bala (Kaushik's colleague in office)this weekend. The lake is unique in a way that the maximum depth is about 6 feet. Its not a tourist spot as such so the crowd was not there and place was much cleaner as well. The water is clear as can been seen in some pics. Spent around 4 hours travelling around in a boat hired for Rs 600. The lake is close to Chennai- around 70Km ....on bike it took around 1.5 hrs to reach the place. On the way there is good scenery around as paddy farming all along the road stretch. We were lucky enough to spot the "Big Fish " which happen to enter the lake by mistake. If the slideshow is not running one can view the pics here.

11 minutes

Just finished reading the next book by same author, yes Paulo Coelho this morning around 3.30 am. It’s again a superb piece of work. As I read more books my appreciation for the author is increasing. What I like about the books read so far is they prompt me to think, shape up my views on various aspects. I was so involved with the story that I didn’t feel like breaking reading at all.

Eleven minutes happens to be story of a girl from interior of Brazil who goes on to become a prostitute in Switzerland. The book portrays the story of this lady finding true love, understanding various facets of the pleasure and pain. The story happens to be based on a true story. Also one gets insight on why some people find pleasure in pain, and how the same can be achieved by various means. The dialects sometimes seem too philosophical and difficult to understand sometimes and detailed explanation of justifying an act as felt by the character and the very next chapter is complete opposite as why the act is not good and how one can accomplish the same result using other means which seem to be much more correct. So at one moment you are bind to think what the character is thinking as being correct and the very next moment the author presents a completely different view of same through the character again. Paulo does a wonderful job of holding of the interest in the story till the very last moment. The story ends on an open note but only after one reads the Afterwords one can see the ending. Since most of the dialogues are without refereeing to who said it, it is difficult to grasp who said it if one is not into it…even then sometimes there are confusions …but mostly one can make out. I would be wrong to say I understood all what is there to learn in one reading, I guess I need to read it 2-3 times to get all points which the author is trying to make. There is a lot to learn from the book and reflect upon. I never felt fiction books would be like this as I didn’t read any such before.

Some quotes:
* Prostitution isn’t like other businesses: beginners earn more and more experienced earn less
* People talk as if they knew everything, but if you dare to ask a question, they don’t know anything
* If you live your life intensely, you experience pleasure all the time and don’t feel the need for sex
* World go round is not the search for pleasure, but the renunciation of all that is important
* As you go in on the first floor back window. –You need to read the book in order to get this one ;)
* True experience of freedom: having the most important thing in the world (love) without owning it
* 11 minutes- the amount of time spent actually having sex
*Some Brazilian superstitions:
-when you visit someone for the first time, you must not be the first to open the door when you leave, because if you do, you will never return to that house
-You should never light more than three things with the same match
*Shu-gen-do

The Alchemist

It is an amazing book to read. No wonder the author Paulo Coelho shot up in limelight after its publication. Written in a very simple language and catches readers interest right from the start….though there were few words I had difficulty in comprehending. It is a story of a shepherd boy who goes on to pursue his dream and difficulties he faces and the learning’s he makes along the path to realizing his dream. There are many things to learn from the story. Balu referred this book long time back while in 2nd semester of MBA. I finally got hold of it in HCL library about last week. The story is not lengthy, only 177 pages. This happens to be my fictional book read after a very long time…I guess the last was in 2004.

Listed below are some of the quotes in the book which I really liked :
*If you start out by promising what you don’t even have yet, you will lose your interest to work towards getting it
*Intuition is really a sudden immersion of life, where the histories of all people are connected, and we are able to know everything , because its all written there
*When you posses great treasures within you and try to tell others of them, seldom are you believed
*There was a language in the world that everyone understood. It was the language of enthusiasm, of things accomplished with love and purpose, and as part of something believed in and desired
*Never stop dreaming

Here you can find more reviews of the book.

Anil's Wedding

Landed in Chennai around 12.30 pm from Pondicherry on Sunday, wasted half an hour in first going for local train, then finding big queue , coming back to catch bus....only to wait in same for about 20 minutes, getting started and bus conductor telling bus will take about 1 hr to reach the nearest point to Chennai Central station, already 1 pm, got down few stops after at Guindy from bus to catch an auto, took half an hour , finally got into train where Kaushik was waiting in anticipation if I would make it in time....well I landed 15 min before departure of train at 2 pm...good enough :) and off to Nellore in AC Chaircar. Chiru(Srivatsav) came to pick us at the station , Nellore happens to be Chiru's hometown so we had planned to stay back at his place which happens to be a big one. One can make out how big just by knowledge of that his house has got a lift..no kidding ...a proper lift.... happens to be 3 storey building and has a swimming pool in house( not operational currently) . His brother is a well known doctor in the area and the first floor and ground floor are part of nursing home.

Attended Anils wedding in the evening around 8.45 pm, the place was well light with attractive lighting on the outside...we could spot a dozen buildings being adorned with lights on the way...signifying an auspicious occasion to get married...Anil and his wife Bharti were very well dressed for the occasion :)....Anil's shopping for wedding across Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad seemed to have payed off well ;) . People were lining up to give their wishes and blessings to the newly wed couple. On the terrace of the wedding location, delicious food was served....in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian varieties. Good to see smiles on everyone around :).

(chair car from Chennai to Nellore....saw the LED display panel giving Kilometer(Km) reading for the next stop...---at the end on right side along the luggage area----)

Travel to Pondicherry

(click on the picture to know little more detail)

Finally went to Pondicherry this weekend with Sachin. We departed from my place at about 7.30 on Saturday morning and got hold of the ECR(East Coast Road) expressway bus. The view is very scenic along this route as the road runs along the stretch which has direct visibility to the ocean. We reached within 3 hrs to Pondicherry where a rickshaw man guided us to the guest house. The first one he showed was quite expensive, so we went around looking for something cheap as the room was to be used mostly for sleeping at night only. We managed to find a decent guest house for Rs.360/day pretty soon. We had done some research on the travel part and had already decided few places to visit and renting out a 2 wheeler for the same. After checking in we washed our faces, tried to play around with the number of TV channels and then left to have our breakfast. Rented out a Kinetic and left for Auroville….which was our first destination. Had a tough time finding the place with many U turns, but finally managed to get through. Auroville happens to be quite place where you can see lot of non Indians living peacefully in good ambient surroundings. The details can be found here. The property in Auroville belongs to the community as such and no one owns it personally, it’s a small city in itself. The motto is to signify human unity. The foundation happened in Feb 28, 1968 with collection of native soil of around 174 different countries bought by the representatives of those countries. The whole concept was the idea of Sri Aurbindo, whose pictures one can find throughout Pondicherry in Hotels, Guest houses and other places. We traveled around some places including Matrimandir. The place also has guest houses where people usually come to stay for a week. The whole atmosphere is very calm and relaxed. We headed back around 4.30 pm towards the Pondicherry city again, got our shots from the room and went out to the beach. Rested and gazed at the ocean for a while, felt very calm and relaxing to rest at the beach in sand. Sachin didn’t sit on sand for long, he was pondering or doing don’t know what starring at the ocean. The crowd at the beach was mostly young 24-29 mostly. By the time we were leaving it was already dark. Spotted a children’s park with French architecture buildings on way back, stopped for a while and then left for guest house for some cleaning after traveling all day. Went to a nice posh restaurant for dinner, where all things didn’t did not turn out that well as the way we thought…. There were no seats available at the start, so they asked us to wiat at the bar area…where Sachin happen to suggested to have some drink while waiting…we decided to have a Martini….did not asked for the price and it cost us a bomb…though it was good. Next we managed to get a table but to our amazement there wasn’t a single waiter or waitresses looking at us in case we need anything. We had planned for a buffet so started after waiting if any of the waiters would turn up. Then dal and chapattis were to be served at the table as written in the menu, we got all stuff but didn’t seem to find anyone coming with the chapattis after waiting for quite awhile. Finally had to call a waiter, who managed to look at us , and then got the rotis in next 15 minutes….I think we being placed at a corner area , were in advantage with respect to having the outside view clearly…but at clear disadvantage when it came to servicing by the waiters….Anyways we were quite upset with the same…finally after finishing off with dinner when I went to have dessert , a cook came and offered his services…as to help me out in picking up the same…I asked him about few dishes and he explained it with complete knowledge of the same….well the frustration cooled down a lot for me…though we were waiting for a feedback form if they would provide with the bill…but they didn’t ….anyways went out and strolled along the shoreline for a while…..Both were extremely tired with full days traveling and were off to sleep by 11 pm. The next morning started at 6 am, and we headed to the beach again and landed there by 6.30 am. Ah an amazing view in the morning…we missed the sunrise though…..throughout the journey period the weather was excellent so didn’t feel any heat….and no rain as well. Packed off the stuff by 8.30 am, had traditional south Indian breakfast (idli-vada) , returned the kinetic and left off for the bus stand…cool trip…though quite exhausting….and for me it was not yet over as I had to catch a train just after reaching Chennai to Nellore…to attend Anil’s (roomie Srivatsav’s friend) wedding reception. Going with Sachin to Pondicherry proved to be very beneficial as most places, people were much comfortable in speaking Tamil, though English was also acceptable but not well understood.

The Tao of Loyalty

Tao is a school of Chinese philosophy which says that life is full of contradictions(yin and yang) and when one understands these contradictions, one is better able to manage life.
Tao of Loyalty- a tool or philosophy that allows an organization to understand and measure the physiological as well as behavioural loyalty of its employees at any point of time.

Got hold of this book in HCL library. The book is quite interesting with writer trying to quantify and measure loyalty and bringing up some BCG matrix type 2x2 matrix to segment employees and suggesting appropriate action to be taken based on the quadrant the employees are in.

The book starts of with referring to people as the 5th P of marketing and then defining employee loyalty on 2 different scales emotional and behavioural. Now whats the difference in the two.

Emotional Loyalty (EL)- Positive disposition that an employee has towards the organization, the "feel good" element or how psychologically wedded the employee is to the organization.

Behavioral Loyalty(BL)- Stated future behaviour of the employee where behaviour relates to action or reaction to an object or event.

To further illustrate the point writer uses this example, If an employee says "I have always treated my company's problem as my own", then the statement would relate to behaviour, as it is statement of action. However, if the employee says. "I feel my company problems are my own", then the statement would relate to feeling(emotion).

The 2X2 matrix based on emotional and behavioural loyalty classifies employees as accessible(EL high BL low), truly loyal(both EL, BL high), high risk(both EL, BL low) and trapped (EL low BL high). Then there are characteristics defined for each segment of employees. Next 11 factors are defined which impact loyalty and then writer refers the ubiquitous managerial grid, which has two scales again- task and people. The 10 factors are put in two baskets of task(Job satisfaction, Role Clarity, Job resources, Accomplishment and Vision Buy in) and people(Appreciation, Valued, Fairness, Trust and Care & Concern) and Communication being the 11th factor linking the two baskets. High scores on task factors set an employee up to improve productivity levels whereas high scores on people factor means that employee is working in a nurturing environment that sets him up for future productivity. Communication factor becomes the base (starting point) in building loyalty in organization and is the foundation on which Task and People factors can be built. Then each of the 11 factors have been evaluated to the level they impact the loyalty of an employee, correlation has been used to judge the same. There is reference of three important roles in the organization that impact the task and people factors are Leader (CEO), HR and the immediate supervisor. The same have been explained as to what should there role be in shaping up a truly loyal workforce. The author cautiously points out in the end that there may be other factors which he has not explored.
Some thoughts:
Huum now based on the reading i think I would fall in the Trapped category(High BL, low EL) in present organization as of now. Also reminds me of the Simplicity book I read sometime back where the authors point out that there is no big thing in having vision...its more or less not of much use.....just an excuse for top executives to go out in some exotic location , relax and come back and do business as usual....happens to be one of the quotes at beginning of chapter on the same topic and this tao book showing vision buy-in as having a significant positive impact on employee loyalty. People might have different views of looking at it and based on there personal experience might have very contradictory views. As per me I fail to see myself too inspired by the vision of the company. Good work to do is more inspiring :) and appreciation in form of just thanks is more motivational. The business primary objective is to be profitable. Doing business primarily treating employee as just a resource to be used would not sustain it for long especially in a competitive environment, but then running business with major focus on making sure employees are satisfied also seems to be too rosy picture. The time and cost factor come into play. One doubt I usually have when people respond to surveys is how smart or how long do they think before answering the questions in the survey and whether they answer based on what is in real or what they ideally feel should be done. How true are they to themselves while answering or they cant make judgements or they tailor their judgements ?? some random thoughts.......

Tirupathi temple visit!

Had made plans to go to Pondicherry with Sachin in the weekend, but that all changed when Meena said she is going to Tirupathi temple .Me and Sachin decided to join Meena and her husband Prakash. The temple happens to be the richest temple in India and the 2nd most visited in the world after Vatican. For the earnings...read this text "The World Famous Tirupathi Tirumala Temple receives an annual income of Rs. Three Thousand one hundred Crores in the form of direct cash collected from various sources. In the Financial year 2005-06, the TTD collected 2400 Kilograms of Gold 2,33,000 Kgs of Silver and 543 Kgs of other Precious Stones including Diamonds, Rubies etc. from the devotees."
1 crore is equivalent to 10 million.

Saturday morning we started off at around 7.30 am and reached Thirumala around 11.30 am in the new Honda City which Prakash had just got a day earlier. Journey was filled with beautiful scenery, mountains on both sides and greenery all around. On reaching we found out that the tickets will be available at 2 am the next day….huum we were just deciding what to do next when a person approached to offer us tickets to the temple with some added premium. We managed to get the tickets at a whopping 400% premium….well worth enough for visit arrangement on same day. Cameras and cell phones are not allowed inside temple so had to leave all in the car. There are 3 lines to the temple, which merge at different locations on the way, the free line, Rs50 line and Rs100 line…..we got tickets for 100 Rs line and everything looked to be smooth, we were thinking of finishing the temple visit by 2.30 pm. But the things did not turn out as we had expected, there were 9 rooms each 50 x 15 x 18 foot size in which people were lining up. The rooms were airy enough as there was iron railing at 3 ends with open view to outside and wall on one end, mango drink(Frooti) and mineral water sellers were doing business through the same. The sellers were workforce of the temple only. For the convenience of the visitors there were benches laid out for resting…….for about 1 hr everything was smooth but the line did not tend to move much smoothly…..slowly the unrest among people began to show up….the people at back started coming to front using the benches area…climbing over the benches and moving forward, first few did it…people did not say much but then it turned worse…more and more people started doing the same and soon we had parallel lines along the bench area along with the main one. There was chaos ….specially for those with kids it was even worse…because of all compressing, pushing and increased temperature…kids started crying all around…though some were still smiling….but soon after like bandwagon effect …most started weeping if not by themselves…seeing the others weeping loudly…..Over and above this….fights broke out at regular interval between those who were in line and those forming the parallel line…some kept saying seeing the same “ Jhagda mat karo, ladoo khao, jay Govinda!” ( don’t fight, eat sweet, chanting god name Govinda!)…..though it looked rewarding to jump across benches and move faster but we decided to stick to the main line…..People in parallel line with kids started using a technique…first they would pass on the kids over to the other room and then use the excuse to move to the other room…..taking along with them the other members…...some had become deaf while they moved in the parallel line….not listening to any comments the regular line people were passing on them…it was utter chaotic…. We all were carrying multiple sweats on our body, dominant one being our own and with all kind of varieties ;) on hands specially….oh ya there was so called one security fellow as well….but he was there for an ad campaign I guess….just showing his teeth :D when people said the others are breaking the normal line and forming the parallel one…no action just a mute spectator….I think he would be fed up of having to deal with such situations on daily basis and had left it to people to manage among themselves. One person just stuck on my back…as if he can move faster that way…then one lady trying to find a space to move ahead between Sachin and myself and pushing both in the process….around 500 people were there in a room which ideally should have around 150-200 people…huuf…what seemed like an hour and half journey turned into 4 + hour journey…..finally we managed to visit the temple where the main deity idol was kept. Huum but the deity was at a distance of about 15 m from where the people could view…In the early morning session’s people have a chance to view the deity up close from 1-3 meters. There were around 10-15 member staff in the temple premises pushing people around to move forward and not stop for long to pray, so one had to start praying while on the move so that one can pray while being in the temple premises 3-5 seconds was the time one could get to stand in front of deity and pray. Finally we were done with temple visit and collecting the Prasad by 5.30 pm. All were too exhausted but effort worth spent as we made it to temple visit on same day…. We had quick dosas at a nearby restaurant after that and went back downhill to find accommodation in one of the hotels. We managed to find a suite room in one of the hotels and stayed back in the same. The next morning we visited another temple of Padmavathi . Here we finished off quite fast by money power for quick entrance and moving around…. We arrived back in Chennai at around 1.30 pm on Sunday. As being my first visit to the South India side…I find a great variation in the temple architecture with respect to those I have seen in the Northern and Western part of the country. Thanks to Meena & Prakash for planning out their trip :)!!
