Thought

What if there is a computerized terminal analyzing whats happening around the world in different countries and collects information as to how different problems are being resolved in different regions. Then based on observations in a particular region proposing the solutions which have been effective in other regions/country/city/district. All this being Proactive than being retrospective.

It is similar to idea we usually apply in corporates right?? see across different engagements/divisions how things are being done and problems being tackled and then transfer the best practices across so that we leverage on our learnings.....

Just a thought !!

False Economy by Alan Beattie

Came across this book in Landmark stores at Spencer Plaza some time back. It was put on discount so got it cheaper than original price. Rs 90 savings. I have been finding it hard to keep up with the habit of reading but still try to take out time whenever I can...."as long as one has will one will find a way".The book took a relative longer time to finish , roughly around 1.5 months. Quite a tough read if you try to put a correlation with the title of the book at first. Now since it took 1.5 months I vaguely recall some parts and trying to put a meaning to what I read ...how does it fit.Anyways , about the book. It is quite interesting and informative on many aspects..... trying to put a meaning to why the things are the way they stand today even when they sometimes look so foolish.... book is filled with examples. At first it looks puzzlingly but then Alan tries to put the reasoning behind the observed phenomenon.... something all "Economist" are fond of doing....why only them though...in fact anyone having the curiosity . The book gives a lot of emphasis on the historical origins of the current state of affairs and observations. Author has indeed done a thorough research on history as well to write this book. Book also covers about the India's growth in service sector and dominance of China in manufacturing and why that is the way it is. Again all things are explained with historical perspective with sufficient details and reasoning.Rather than call it False Economy I might also prefer to call it "Real Economy" also .
Here is good reference for review.

Animated Explanation

Animated guide on BBC Science website is worth a look for understanding quickly about the basics of some of the natural disaster phenomenon occuring in the world . Reminded me of school days when we had it as part of science course . Good refresher :). I find this kind of explanation way better than textual one alone.

Play- A Woman Alone

We went out with Srini to watch the play titled Woman Alone today. Have been searching through papers and net on the plays currently on in Chennai. Fortunately , the Chennai Times friday edition listed some plays running in the city with contact details.

About the Play:
The play was orgnaised by ANEW, an NGO working for empowermnet of women and credited with getting 4000 underprivileged women placed into the workforce. The play was split into 3 parts, first one showcasing the daily chores of a working wife (amusing as well as serious at times), the second one showing Meddia a woman abandoned by her husband for a new girl trying to cope with realties and challenging some of the society norms " to say" as dictated by men and last one the most amusing showcasing a woman locked by her husband in the house .... here the story of 3rd one. Each part was roughly 20 minutes act.

Experience:
1.Most striking was the people coming to watch the show. it didnt look like we were in Chennai as the audience seemed to quite sophisticated and high class.
2.The acts performed were well done. Not a regular visitor to theaters....this being the first one and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Tussle for Black American females

How one event is interlinked to something else not thought of is impressively reflected by this article on Economist. Balance in shifting in favor of men in the marriage scenario among black Americans. Solution seems to be not to lock up more black men especially for small offences :).
