Pulicat Lake!

Went to Pulicat lake with Kaushik and Bala (Kaushik's colleague in office)this weekend. The lake is unique in a way that the maximum depth is about 6 feet. Its not a tourist spot as such so the crowd was not there and place was much cleaner as well. The water is clear as can been seen in some pics. Spent around 4 hours travelling around in a boat hired for Rs 600. The lake is close to Chennai- around 70Km ....on bike it took around 1.5 hrs to reach the place. On the way there is good scenery around as paddy farming all along the road stretch. We were lucky enough to spot the "Big Fish " which happen to enter the lake by mistake. If the slideshow is not running one can view the pics here.

Hi Sindhiya, dont have regular net connectivity hence delayed response. In case you are yet to visit the place. Here are some of the features of place:
1. No crowd
2. The depth of lake is only 6 feet so you can see people just walking along in lake ( mostly for fishing)
3. Water is quite clean and transparent near the small islands
4. We were lucky to spot a big fish.....you might get lucky as well :)
5. The road to the lake is calm and with lot of trees. If no sun...even more pleasent experience.

Hi Friends,

yes its a good place to visit. But also be aware of the danger there.
Be careful while going for a boat ride.My friend, his brother and nephew lost thier lives in the waters of pulicat on 12-04-09.
As the boatman was new he did not give any warnings to tourists. My friends wanted to take bath as the water was less,so they got down from the boat after 10kms from the shore. All of a sudden those who were trying to bath were pulled deep inside by the under water cyclone or something....
All the three from the same family is dead now. The boatmen did not know boating. Please be cautious, dont try to take bath in the waters. Please dont take risk.

Hi Jan,
Greetings from India. Yah internet has made world really small :). Denmark interesting.
I have not lived long in south India but can recommend few places.
1. Auroville (near Pondicherry). It is very different from usual places so would be interesting for you.
2. Tirupathi temple...If you are in Tamilnadu you cannot afford to miss it. It is the richest temple in India. (http://parshwadeep.blogspot.com/2007/08/tirupathi-temple-visit.html)
3. Golden Temple in Vellore
4. Mahabalipuram

Hope it helps.I will try to get info from local folks here on more temples information. Let me know your email so I can forward the information to you.

Thanks Deepa for posting the alert. It is sad to hear about what happened to your friends.

Hey!
We're a group of 9 people who would like to visit Pulicat tomorrow! By some stroke of luck if you read this in time, can you give us details of what we can do in a day, average expenses per person and the food options available in Pulicat.

Thanks!

Hi Khushi,

It has been almost 1.5 yrs since I had been there. We did not eat anything when I was there so it would be hard to comment on that part.Hire a boat or 2 boats ride for 4-5 hours and enjoy the lake. Easily available. You may find very few people around as it's a weekday. You can try going to the islands on extreme right of the lake. It has very clear water and u will a variety of shells( if you are interested in collection of same). Enjoy your trip !!

Can someone respond to dilip's request on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 11:32:00 PM.

The question is about the safety at Pulicate lake when we go with girlfriend/spouse.

Parsh said...

Go in a group. Going alone with gf is not recommended.
